Job Description

We are seeking a candidate who can bring world class tooling solutions to our steel fabrication and welding department, including incorporating automation into fixturing, and fixture design for robotic welding.  The ideal candidate is someone who can think creatively and develop simple and robust tooling solutions to ensure repeatable quality parts.

This position requires collaborative, hands on work in a fast-paced and demanding environment, where rapidly developed, robust and creative solutions are valued. Solutions are developed using an iterative process oriented approach. Expect to rapid prototype your ideas and run experiments, while evaluating your results, adjusting and repeating this cycle until you reach a solution.

This position requires communication and collaboration across many departments, and the ability to communicate plans horizontally and vertically within the organization.  The candidate must be able to create project plans and communicate status to plan, including developing recovery plans and taking personal responsibility for meeting their plan.

The candidate must be able to navigate and contain ambiguity, and demonstrate strong problem solving skills. The work is in a highly dynamic environment, where you will work with cross functional groups to solve problems and implement countermeasures.

 

Requirements

  • Experience in tooling design and/or mechanical design.
  • Experience with steel fabrication methods (welding, punches, dies, manual machining, CNC machining).
  • Experience with simple control systems design (sensors and feedback loops).
  • Experience fabricating and rapid prototyping using materials such as wood and steel.
  • Experience working in a Lean Manufacturing environment, and familiar with concepts of Kaizen, Just In Time and Jidoka.
  • Familiar with Lean Manufacturing process evaluation tools, such as cycle times, material flow and people flow.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks or equivalent programs. 
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including mechanical and electrical schematics.
  • Interpersonal skills to be able to convey technical engineering concepts (technical and non-technical); and to work cooperatively with internal and external customers. 
  • Ambulatory ability to walk and stand on a continuous basis; to bend, stoop, and kneel on an intermittent basis; to lift medium weight objects up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis. 
  • Sufficient hand-arm-eye coordination to operate a computer keyboard and pointing device. 
  • Visual acuity to see moving objects, read words, letters and drawings.
  • Sufficient auditory ability to carry on conversations over the phone and in person, and project voice in a loud environment.

 

Qualifications

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BS in Mechanical, Engineering Technology, Electrical, Industrial, Civil or Aeronautical) that is ABET accredited.
  • Experience in a lean manufacturing environment (2+ years).
  • Mechanical design a manufacturing environment (2+ years).

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Specialized professional knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of mechanical or industrial engineering.  
  • Working knowledge of Solidworks or equivalent programs. 
  • Sufficient human relations skill to convey technical engineering concepts to others; and technical employees; and to work cooperatively with internal and external customers. 
  • Technical writing skills sufficient to prepare product specifications, test, and process documentation. 
  • Advanced mathematics skills. 
  • Hands on experience CNC equipment such as Lathes and Mills preferred (Programming, Optimizing, troubleshooting, etc.)
  • Ability to perform all the responsibilities of the position. 
  • Ability to read mechanical and electrical schematics, blueprints. Ability to use AutoCAD or equivalent engineering software. 
  • Requires the ability to conduct mathematical exercises using physics, algebra, analytic geometry, and statistical analysis.  Requires the ability to convert designs into production action plans. 
  • Ability to learn and perform within the principles of Lean Manufacturing, Just-in-Time, and Total Quality Management.
  • Ambulatory ability to walk and stand on a continuous basis; to bend, stoop, and kneel on an intermittent basis; to lift medium weight objects up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis. 
  • Sufficient hand-arm-eye coordination to operate a computer keyboard and pointing device. 
  • Visual acuity to see moving objects, read words, letters and drawings.
  • Sufficient auditory ability to carry on conversations over the phone and in person, and project voice in a noisy
