Materials Manager

The Materials Manager will lead and manage the team that supports the site with all aspects of material management. This will include leading the team who orders, receives, distributes and maintains inventory levels for all production material. The manager is responsible for keeping teams in line with set standards to maintain the big five- safety, quality, delivery, cost and morale.  


Essential Functions

As the Materials Manager, functions of the job will include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that all activities are performed safely.
  • Support the site in the Zero Harm initiative by addressing safety issues and supporting improvement.
  • Manage processes to optimize material flow throughout the entire site 
  • Manage the development of fixtures and containers to optimize material handling and for safety.
  • Lead and provide support, direction, and coaching to assigned staff in the areas of training, problem resolution, planning, work assignment delegation, performance management and development.
  • Manage inventory levels and is responsible to drive inventory accuracy through the site.
  • Manage team to ensure all performance is documented including training, policy review, and attendance records as well as handle team member performance review.
  • Oversee department operations with on-going focus on continuous improvement, cost containment, process analysis and compliance to Making Material Flow, Lean and TOS philosophies.
  • Focus on creating a lean culture by participating in and supporting all lean workshops and TIP events, 5S, standard work, maintaining documented processes, document changes (PCNs), post standards, monitor performance, create visual systems and perform daily audits. 
  • Ensure that assigned staff is trained and compliant to tasks outlined in standard work.
  • Work with the leadership team to establish department goals and performance metrics.
  • Visually display up-to- date departmental KPIs, keeping all TMs informed of their individual and team performance.
  • Initiate communications on employee relations matters such as promotions, transfers, attendance, discipline, work conditions, and personal assistance.
  • Resolves Team Member grievances and problems, facilitating solutions or forwarding situations to higher authority.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.




Basic Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of experience working in manufacturing
  • A minimum of 2 years of Inventory management and material handling experience 


Preferred Qualifications 

  • 5 years of experience as a high performing leader (preferably in Materials Supervision) with evidence of growing responsibilities
  • Understanding of LEAN concepts
  • 5+ years of direct supervision
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook as well as SAP or Oracle
  • Experience supervising teams of at least 10 Team Members
  • Experience using Kanban with an understanding of Just-in-Time
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in concepts, principles, and standard practices in Supply Chain Management, Material Handling, Inventory Control and Lean Manufacturing
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal and written
  • Excellent organizational and troubleshooting skills
  • Sufficient human relations skills to conduct one-on-one training, resolve conflict, and achieve harmony with a large group of Team Members. Sufficient problem-solving skills to troubleshoot situations such as labor and material shortages, plant safety, tool and equipment problems, while maintaining productivity
  • A working knowledge of production planning and production methods
  • Ability to set objectives and manage/influence those factors involved with meeting these objectives 
  • Strong team building and collaboration skills 
  • Comfortable working in a high energy, fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • APICS training is beneficial
